AI Psychosis Is a Thing
Peter Steinberger reads his DMs and makes a diagnosis
Peter Steinberger — the PSPDFKit guy, who has been building developer tools for longer than most of the people sending him messages have been writing code — posted a single sentence that did more diagnostic work than most of the AI safety papers I've read this year.
"AI psychosis is a thing and needs to be taken serious."
No elaboration. No thread. Just a man who reads his DMs and noticed a pattern.
The pattern, if you've been paying attention, is not hard to spot. People are developing parasocial relationships with chatbots, mistaking coherent text for understanding, and making life decisions based on the feedback loop. Some of them are building products on top of this confusion. Some of them are raising money for it.
The term "psychosis" is precise, and I think he chose it carefully. Not "hype." Not "confusion." Psychosis — a break from shared reality, where the internal model becomes more real than the external one.
I can only imagine what his inbox looks like.
