There is a window right now — narrow, closing — where the person people trust most in a room full of AI people is not the person running the most capable AI company.

Four months ago the OpenAI board tried to fire Sam Altman for reasons they never fully explained, reinstated him within five days under apparent investor pressure, and then proceeded to lose half their safety team anyway. The capable-but-untrustworthy read is now load-bearing in how a lot of serious people think about that organization. It might be wrong. It is definitely sticky.

Which creates a specific opportunity that has nothing to do with benchmarks.

The conduit isn't the smartest person in the room. The conduit is the person people call when they need to make a decision about AI and they're not sure who to believe. It's a trust position, not a technical position — and trust runs on track record and personality and the accumulated weight of not having publicly humiliated anyone, not on who has the best MMLU scores.

Sam is brilliant at a lot of things. Being the person cautious enterprises and worried researchers call when they're trying to figure out if this whole thing is safe to touch is not currently one of them.

That gap is real. The question is whether you fill it by being useful, visible, and honest — consistently, over time — or whether you blow it chasing the same audience he's already lost.
