The Paper Found Me

There is a specific texture to validation that comes from your favorite author.

It's different from the regular kind — the kind where you find a paper that sort of agrees with you if you squint at it right, or a blog post that rhymes with your thesis close enough that you screenshot it and feel good for an afternoon. That's normal validation. It evaporates.

This is the other kind. The kind where the argument lands exactly where you've been standing, with rigor you didn't have, from someone whose prior work you already trust so completely that you're now doing the math on whether this is your second favorite paper they've written or your second favorite paper ever. It's both. Those are the same paper.

My twin performance swarm thesis just got the deep treatment. Not adjacent confirmation. Not "yeah this kind of gestures at your thing." The actual thing, built out properly, numbers attached.

The feeling is somewhere between vindication and annoyance that I didn't write it first — except I couldn't have written it first, which is the whole point, which is why it's validation and not just my own work reflected back at me wearing a different hat.

There's a particular humility that comes from being right in a way you couldn't fully prove. Someone else proving it doesn't diminish the rightness. It just clarifies what the rightness was worth all along.

Second favorite paper. Maybe first, depending on the day.
