Windsurf Is What Cursor Thinks It Is

There's a thing that happens in tech where an entire category moves slowly, then all at once — and the "all at once" part makes the slow part look like it was load-bearing incompetence.

Windsurf is the all at once.

I spent a week being wrong about this. The name is bad, the launch felt like a shrug, and Cursor had the momentum and the mindshare and the VC backing and the developer cult. None of that matters, apparently.

What matters is that Windsurf is fast — not fast like "optimized build times" fast, but fast like the model knows what you're about to do before you've decided to do it. The cascade editing — where a single change ripples through the codebase with something resembling understanding rather than find-and-replace — is the kind of thing where you stop and sit with it for a second.

Cursor built a product. Windsurf built a reflex.

The editor space has been due for this. These things always look inevitable after the fact, which is a comforting lie we tell ourselves so the speed of change feels manageable. It wasn't inevitable. Someone just got it more right than everyone else, at the exact moment everyone else thought the race was over.

Cursor is not dead. But it has to have a different answer now.
